Canadian Quilt Talk is a weekly on-line podcast hosted by Brandy Lynn Maslowski. Currently available on iTunes and Feedburner, Canadian Quilt Talk aims to inspire quilters and fiber artists as well as highlight Canadian teachers, quilt shops and products. Each episode features an informative topic or special guest interview along with “The Quilter’s Corner”, a segment where listeners send in a short story about how the humor of quilting has touched their lives. This week’s Episode 15, being released Thursday October 10th, will include an interview with me!
After Brandy contacted me about the interview, I became curious about Canadian Quilt Talk and asked her how it all started. Brandy said, “I believe that if you want to be successful, not only in business, but in your heart, you need to care about the people first. I started Canadian Quilt Talk in July 2013 and it has just exploded. I’ve connected with so many people – I never imagined I’d be interviewing Ricky Tims by my 7th episode!”
Brandy Lynn Maslowski, of Summerland, British Columbia, is also a fiber artist, pattern designer, quilt teacher, speaker and judge. She started her career as a firefighter, following in the footsteps of her father, uncle and great-grandfather. It was challenging – and trying at times – but it really shaped her into who she is today. Brandy told me “I learned so much, but over that 15-year span I found myself escaping to my studio for a reprieve more and more. It was my son that made me realize I wasn’t living my passion one day when he hand made me a pile of paper money and said in his 6 year old voice, “here’s some money so you can quit your job and you won’t have to be sad.” This child of mine was seeing a clearer picture than I was.”
Brandy decided it was time for a change and dove head first into the world of quilting and fiber art. Upon starting her business – Brandy Lynn Designs – a mentor suggested that one way to make a name in this industry was to enter her work into quilt shows. Taking a studious approach, Brandy began to research what judges would expect and before she knew it she “was head over heels studying every style and technique of quilting in existence”. She loved it so much, she signed up for the CQA Judge Certification Program and is currently an Apprentice Judge working towards full certification. She is well on her way, as she will be part of the judging team for the 2014 Canadian National Juried Show.
