Machine piecing, machine quilting, hand couching and embroidery
Two remarkable women from Thamesville, ON commissioned me to create a quilt as a gift for Canadian Member of Parliament Joy Smith. They challenged me to incorporate imagery from The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom, the true story of a family who sheltered Jews in a secret room in their home in Haarlem, Holland during World War II.
The Star of David in the center of the quilt represents these persecuted Jews and motifs of bricks, bars, chain and barbed wire act as metaphors for bondage. The Mariner’s Compass shines like a star pointing to safe harbour, breaking free from captivity. The True North, strong and free, stands on guard in the fight against modern-day slavery.
