September

Blackboard ABCSeptember is a time of transition. Summer gives way to fall and children are back to school – some of them taking their first steps to kindergarten; others making bigger leaps to high school or university. It is a bittersweet time – a time to gear up and return to routine, less time for leisure and the relaxed social pace of summer, but heralding the beautiful colors of autumn, and the renewed motivation to accomplish much and increase productivity. Ironically, it means less time for me to work on my quilt about time, as my schedule becomes filled with workshops, lectures and guild meetings, but more time to share my passion for quilting and appliqué!

The birth flowers for the month of September are the aster and the morning glory. The aster is a daisy-like flower deriving its name from the Greek word star, which it resembles. Its primary meaning is love and it comes in pink, white, red, lilac and mauve. I chose a variety of mauve fabrics to depict the asters in my quilt.

The morning glory, another symbol of affection, opens with the morning light and dies in the evening. Each day, new flowers bloom and their saucer shaped blossoms allow pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies and bees to gather nectar. They also come in vibrant pinks, blues, purples and white. My morning glories are white – with dramatic purple centers – which I thought nicely complemented the accompanying asters.

Here is September in my quilt about time.

The birthstone for the month is the stunning deep blue sapphire. It has often been chosen by royalty, and one of the most famous sapphires was worn by Princess Diana and then passed down to Kate Middleton for her engagement ring. It was worn by clergy in the middle ages because it symbolized heaven.

The sapphire falls on a seam line between third and fourth quarters, so this is a mock-up of how it will look. It will be located at the 9 o’clock position for the 9th hour, and the 9th month.

The growing season is over and the harvest is here. It is time to enjoy all that the season has to offer. Change is in the air, energizing and motivating us to begin new endeavors. May the momentum of the season carry into all your quilting projects this month.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
